Mason Jar Terrarium Workshop

Come create a tiny & terrific green world inside of a 1/2 gallon mason jar!

Join us on Sunday March 15th at 4:00pm and plant your very own enclosed terrarium. During this hands-on workshop, follow along as we guide you through designing and planting a stunning combination that fills the glass walls with unique plants that can thrive for years inside of the jar with very little care. During the creative fun, enjoy listening to inspiring stories and fascinating facts about the history and magic of terrariums & the plants that grow within them while you craft a piece of living art to take home. This workshop is the perfect blend of creativity, nature, and charm. Bring a sister, mom, significant other, kids or your friends - your miniature garden awaits!

Come learn

  • How these miniature ecosystems are self-sustaining
  • How they work as closed systems
  • How to select suitable plants, soil, and decorative elements (pebbles, moss, figurines)
  • The step-by-step assembly - how to properly layer for drainage, soil, and planting
  • How to care for your new indoor ecosystem for the long-term (it doesn't take much!), everything from the lighting, watering, pruning, and the troubleshooting of common issues

Kids Native Seed Workshop

Got a kid who loves getting messy, building things, and being outside? Then this is a great workshop to learn, have fun & build something to look forward to!

We’re inviting young nature-lovers to a Native Seed Clay Ball Workshop in the Glassroom on March 19, 2026 at 11:00am where kids will:

- Roll their own clay seed balls packed with native wildflower seeds (like milkweed, purple coneflower, ironweed & more!)
- Learn why native plants are superheroes for bees, butterflies, birds, & more
- Discover how throwing these seeded mudballs helps local ecosystems thrive

But, the fun doesn’t stop there…

They’ll also engineer their very own mini seed-ball catapult using simple materials like popsicle sticks so that when this snow melts, they can head outside to launch their seed balls into nature (safely and responsibly, of course!).

They’ll also design & build their very own Pollinator Landing Pad using simple materials like a saucer and colorful marbles & rocks glued to the bottom. When they throw their native seed balls into your garden or nature areas, they can find just the right spot to set the pollinator landing pad & fill it with a little water so that when the butterflies & bees start a'buzzin in the spring & summer as the plants bloom, they have a place to rest & refuel.

This class blends hands-on science, creative building & learning, & FUN- Kids won’t just be playing with mud, they’ll be helping create future pollinator habitats while learning about native plants, conservation, and how small actions make a big difference.

Meadow Planting 101 Workshop

Join us in the Glassroom on March 21st from 4-6 PM with native meadow specialist and local legend, Zach Lester.

Zach Lester brings over 30 years of experience in horticulture. His work includes meadow and native woodland plantings in Ireland, North Carolina, Massachusetts, and Virginia. For 20 years, Zach owned and operated Tree and Leaf Farm, where he grew vegetables year-round and sold at the Dupont Circle and Falls Church farmers markets, as well as to restaurants throughout the Washington metro area. His culinary clients included Alice Waters, José Andrés, and Nora Poullon.

Come hear Zach explore the dynamic beauty and ecology of meadow gardens. Learn how to transform your property from “lawn and order” into a thriving haven of biodiversity. Zach will cover site selection, soil preparation, choosing the right plants and seeds, ideal grass-to-wildflower ratios, weed suppression techniques, and plenty of practical tips for success.

He will also map out the critical phases of meadow maintenance — from first-season mowing schedules to long-term practices that ensure your landscape becomes resilient and self-sustaining for years to come.

This course is perfect for homeowners, seasoned gardeners, and ecological enthusiasts alike. Leave with the confidence to create low-water, low-maintenance habitats that burst with color and life each season.

Once established, meadows require surprisingly little work. Did you know that converting just a 20' x 20' patch of lawn into a native meadow can support the lifecycles of millions of living organisms? Creating a meadow is one of the most impactful steps you can take to improve local ecology and support your community.

Whether you’re dreaming of acres of meadow, looking to rejuvenate an existing planting, or simply starting small, this workshop is for you.

Sign up today and trade lawn for vibrant habitat — supporting native pollinators, birds, soil health, and biodiversity
